CHARACTER INFORMATION

TYPE: Canon AU; please also see Lannistia Lavellan’s app for more information.
NAME: Gianni Lavellan
AGE: 27
MOTIVATION: With the world in peril and he and his sister having the power to stop it, Gianni is motivated by responsibility (and a bit of healthy self-preservation) to save the world. He just wants to do it with as little needless bloodshed as possible, and if it means two Elves gain influence to maybe help their people gain stability, so much the better.
ARRIVAL SCENARIO: The Artifact, to be bonded to his twin, Lannistia.

HISTORY:
Over 20 years before the Inquisition, Gianni was yet to be born as one of two twins to a pair of Elves in an Antivan Alienage. Seeking a better life for themselves and their yet-unborn children, Gianni’s parents begged to join a Dalish clan as they came through the outskirts of their small city to trade. The Keeper agreed, and several months later in the Free Marches back country, Gianni and Lannistia were born into the Lavellan Dalish clan.

Gianni was an active child and always curious about everything around. When he’d exhausted his battery of questions that the Keeper could answer about the world and their Elvhen heritage and whatever else he’d decided to pursue that day, Gianni would go out and learn what he could away from the clan out in the wilds or in any towns they happened to be near. This of course landed him in a lot of trouble through getting into scrapes and the like with both beast and Human. As a way to focus his curious nature, the Keeper set Gianni on the path of not just a hunter as was expected of him, but also as a future hahren, a teacher of children and lorekeeper for Dalish clans. This new role also kept him close with his sister as he would sit with her as she learned her magic in order to become the clan’s First and its future Keeper.
Because of the Conclave’s potential effect on the Dalish in resolving the Mage-Templar war that started several years ago and continued to make travel difficult for the Lavellan clan, the Keeper decided to send Lannistia to spy on the Conclave. Gianni, loathe to see his sister off into a potentially dangerous situation alone and also curious to see Southern Thedas and this important world event, convinced the Keeper to let him accompany Lannistia as a guard.

A rundown of the Dragon Age: Inquisition plot is here. Gianni comes from an AU with the following changes and choices made:
  • Gianni and his twin sister Lannistia are both sent to the Conclave at the behest of their Keeper, instead of just one. They are both saved from the Fade and deemed Heralds of Andraste.
  • Both the mages and the Templars were recruited, with Gianni having gone to recruit the mages. However, this means with the Inquisition’s split attention, they also gained both of the normally mutually exclusive enemies Calpernia and Samson and, because both Dorian and Cole were recruited on their respective quests, they weren’t warned in advance of the attack on Haven. There were far more casualties.
  • Gianni romanced The Iron Bull
  • Stroud was left in the Fade during Here Lies the Abyss.
  • Thanks to having two Inquisitors to explore the Winter Palace and get to the bottom of things, the Inquisitwins were able to blackmail Celene, Gaspard, and Briala into working together.
  • During What Pride Had Wrought, both of the Inquisitors drank from the Well of Sorrows.
  • Leliana was softened and became Divine.
  • Both Jaws of Hakkon and The Descent were completed, but not Trespasser as of his canon point.

PERSONALITY:
On a first impression Gianni comes off as an inquisitive young man, no pun intended. He has the air of someone out to learn everything, with a keen eye for detail and an ear for subtext. He’s always wanted to learn more about the world in which he lives, from the ancient and piecemeal history of his people to the cultures of other nations and races. He loves stories and is quick to either listen to them or tell one of his own, even if it’s to his own embarrassment. He has very little shame, glad to share a laugh at his own expense just as readily as someone else’s. He loves to play jokes and is always ready with a snappy comeback or witty one-liner.

His easygoing manner belies an exceptionally keen and calculating mind, however. While he is genuinely friendly, he is not a fool. He gambles a bit in where he places his trust, but he does it calculatingly, assessing what the poorest outcome could be and deciding if he could live with that before proceeding. In doing so, Gianni is rarely surprised. It has been known to happen, but his policy of expecting the worst while actively hoping and working towards the best keeps him in an excellent position to adapt to any new obstacles before they become insurmountable. For example, Gianni allowed Dorian to join the Inquisition, taking him at his word that he truly wanted to help, but knowing that there was the possibility of his being a Venatori spy. He also knew Leliana would keep a close eye on the mage, and it all turned out fine in the end.

This goes hand in hand with Gianni’s take on faith. Not necessarily religious faith, but Gianni honestly believes in people’s capacity to do good in general and uses that belief to guide some of his decisions. Despite the stigma surrounding the mages and their rebellion, Gianni is still adamant about offering for them to join the Inquisition freely despite many of his advisors and companions telling him he should conscript them or even leave them out for the safety of everyone involved. Again, Gianni’s faith in them paid off as the mages became valuable allies to the Inquisition, which Gianni attributes to treating mages like people, instead of criminals.

All that said Gianni rarely lets himself feel negatively about anything. Even in serious conversation, he always tries to bring up a silver lining, keeping his worries and any sense of foreboding to himself. Because he bottles up any negativity he feels so completely, there are times when he can be pushed to his limit. Facing the loss of a loved one, failing at something that lives may depend on, or other events of serious import always catch Gianni flat footed and he doesn’t know how to respond. If he can, he’ll deal with the logistics of a situation quickly and then retreat to sleep as emotional turmoil exhausts him far more than any physical exertion, but if unable to resolve or retreat, his usually amusing comments will become acerbic or even downright vicious, his well-learned decorum going straight out a window. He’s quick to apologize after the fact, but in the moment he aims to hurt and aims well.

Still, that’s not the norm and in general Gianni is a perfectly affable person with a cunning ear that may learn more about you from what you’re not saying than what you are.

SKILLS / POWERS:

Gianni is a dual-dagger rogue with a specialization as a Tempest, which allows him to use special alchemical flasks to add elemental effects to his melee attacks. He has the entirety of both of these trees with the exception of the Trespasser dependent skills. He also has the Stealth, Evasion, Easy to Miss, and Evade from the Subterfuge tree to round out his rogueyness.

On top of this, as Inquisitor, Gianni has a magical mark on his left hand that glows green and reacts to the Fade (sort of a spirit realm connected to Thedas). He can draw energy from the Fade with it to power an attack, kill demons, and open or close rifts into the Fade. However, since Pelea as far as I’m aware has no connection to the Fade, these powers will be unavailable. The mark itself, however, still remains.

NERFING: Gianni will take a -30 point hit in order to retain his Tempest and preternatural rogue abilities, though he will be without the abilities of the mark as I previously mentioned. Nothing else is world breaking and he will need to make the flasks from what he can find in this new world.

INVENTORY:
  • Twin daggers
  • A lockpicking kit
  • One small elfroot potion
  • One small frost flask
  • One small fire flask
  • One small lightning flask
  • One dragon tooth necklace
